Do I need a hearing test? An Audiologist’s honest answer…

“sort your hearing out…the TV is blaring!”

Mrs Jones is fed up.

She can not stand the TV so loud. And she is tired of asking her husband to get a hearing test.

Mr Jones thinks his hearing is fine. He’s blaming everyone else for mumbling or not speaking loud enough.

He’s not aware of the problems his hearing issue is causing at home. He’s not aware his children are getting frustrated repeating themselves

He says he’ll think about it, privately wonders ‘Do I need a hearing test?’ but most likely waits until he can’t really can’t hear anything, and only then he’ll think about a hearing aid.

He’s not aware he has a hearing loss that could easily be treated now, but maybe not later down the line.

Sound familiar?

We see the above scenario almost every week at our clinics.

It’s just as common with men as it is with women.

Ignoring your hearing loss might be the easiest option, but what really happens when you leave a hearing loss unaided?

  • Home life.

Hearing loss can affect the whole family. Just think about the Jones household above.

Mr and Mrs Jones have shared their life together. Now that Mr Jones has hearing issues, they can’t talk to each other without frustrations. Communication is what they have built their relationship on and has kept them together for all this time.

Not being able to talk to each other can be just as frustrating for children or grandchildren as well. Family time is the most important part of life, especially at these unprecedented times.

Why waste precious time struggling, when a simple solution such as a hearing aid could help relieve the stress?  Hearing aids now come in a range of discreet or invisible styles, and the latest hearing technology is incredible, helping your brain process sounds with zero delay, with natural, crisp sound. They connect to your TV, phone or car, for seamless interaction.

Large beige hearing aids that whilst and echo are a thing of the past!!

  • Social life.

We all avoid uncomfortable situations, it’s inbuilt into us as humans.  Sometimes we are aware we are avoiding it, Sometimes we’re not. Having a hearing loss can be like going into a shell, especially in social situations.

If you have a hearing loss, following along with conversations is hard and often tiring. It’s can be embarrassing when you answer the wrong question, or say something that has already been said.

So you just switch off.

These uncomfortable situations make it less fun to speak with friends and family.

We have clients who have stopped going to the Rugby Club they’ve been going to all their life.  Stopped playing golf or doing the things they enjoy.  Stopped meeting friends for coffee.  Stopped going to meetings or enjoying their job. (All pre-covid of course!)

Just because hearing in busy places seems hard, a hearing aid would help improve all these situations, and the modern technology is designed to adapt to changing soundscapes automatically. Most of the latest hearing aids are extremely clever and have inbuild artificial intelligence (AI) allowing them learn and remember what you need to hear in each environment.

  • Health.

Studies have shown that there is a strong link between age related hearing loss and:

  • cognitive impairment
  • dementia
  • accelerated decline in cognitive function over time

All of which negatively impact your quality of life. If you address the hearing loss sooner, you can reduce the risk of developing further associated health issues later down the line.

Still thinking ‘Do I need a hearing test?’

The worst part of our job is when we can’t help someone who wants to be helped. Thinking ‘do I really need to have a hearing test’ or delaying coming for  a consultation could decrease the chances of us being able to help.

Delaying aiding your hearing loss puts you at risk of never getting on with hearing aids.

With sound processing it certainly is a case of use it or lose it. The sound processing parts of your brain can get shut down if not properly stimulated, so new aids won’t be able help you understand speech.

So if you, or a family member is being stubborn and delaying getting hearing aids…. Please, please, please don’t leave it too long!

The earlier you start with hearing aids, the easier it is to get on with them. Waiting too long and you’ll find them harder to get on with or worse, may not ever get on with any aids.
